Saving Money While Eating Right

The cost of food is so high! Especially if you are trying to buy organic and GMO free items. If I don't watch myself, I can spend a ridiculous amount on my weekly shopping trip. Here are a few tips to help you save money while buying the good stuff!
1. Shop your local grocery fliers and shop at the right times. For example, I try to do my shopping on Monday mornings. I have found great deals this way, like 25% off grass fed lean ground beef. And a package of pork chops that were originally almost $8 bucks, but I scored them for $1.90! $1.90 for 4 all natural no filler or antibiotic added porkchops! What a steal!
2. See if your area has a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). I just joined the local Home Grown Farm and paid $125 for a whole month's worth of right from the farm produce. This is my first experience with this, but I have heard wonderful things about the organization. And I just walk down the street to a neighbor's to pick up my stash every week! How cool is that? Here's the link to the local organization in my area. www.thehgf.com
3. Buy in bulk. My grocery store has a healthy living section that has all sorts of items in bulk. Rice, quinoa, beans, nuts, etc. The unit price is much more economical.
4. Grow your own! If you have a green thumb, try growing your own veggies and herbs. Even if you are short on space, many vegtables thrive in containers. Throw some dirt and seedlings into a pot outside and before you know it, you'll have your own salad! Personally, I have a black thumb. But I am growing herbs on my windowsill!
5. When in doubt, refer to the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen guide above. This will let you save some money buy not buying all organic, but buying what absolutely MUST be organic.
The way I look at it, you either pay the farmer or pay the doctor. I'd prefer to spend my money on good quality food rather than prescription drugs. But using these tips can help you save a little money!
